Any job would help a person's self esteem. Once again the government is the problem rather than the solution. Anytime the minimum wage is raised, there are warning from business that it can cost jobs. Yes, minimum wage is not much, but it is better than wandering around in a state of hopelessness. We need emergency measures to waive the minimum wage in carefully thought out cases so more people can work. Further, our tax dollars that go to vocational schools need to provide more training for these people without jobs. Many entry level jobs could be opened but for the fact that unions have made the cost of taking on apprentices so expensive that society as a whole suffers from a lack of a skilled labor pool while people go about jobless.

Thanks for asking and the compliment. Actually, "Sir Fido" is a pseudonym for our dog Snickers. He's a unique combination of terrier and poodle. We think he's cute too... most of the time.

Brian, I agree that our neighbors should be considerate of others and keep their dogs leashed when outside. Too many times I have been out with my son for a walk or my dog and we have had unwelcome visitors of the canine kind. You may think your dog will never hurt someone but you just never know if you're not around and they get surprised. It's not that hard to keep them on a leash.

P.S. Is that a picture of Sir Fido? He is so cute - what kind of dog is he?

A few things that were shocking about your story. First, no line? There is always a line. Second, a cheerful worker? I read over that part twice. And third, there was a person at the information desk? Everytime I go in there, that desk is empty. I just figured they cut back on staff and don't post a person there anymore.

Now, if they can only become more efficent during busy hours.

I became a regular donor after seeing a blood drive and decided on the spur of the moment to finally "git 'er done". Regular donors allow the blood center to better plan on their inventories. Imagine not knowing if enough blood will be available for surgeries or in my case years ago, after a nasty accident?

Many people believe that there are plenty of "other" people to keep the refrigerators filled with the different types of blood, but the fact is that many willing donors are not able to donate. The standards for healthy blood are very high along with concern for the donors themselves. Many times I've been refused due to a slightly low iron level. As I wait for my turn to come up I will also hear many people being refused to donate due to low iron. We're told to enjoy a steak dinner and come back in a day or two. I'm my case I'll take iron supplements.

So people, please, your donation of blood is needed because, "Many are called, few are chosen". Seems like I heard that once one Sunday...

I was in line to register since moving from SW Waukesha last year and I noted Brien helping a nice, elderly lady that just voted by calling a cab for her with his own cell phone and arranging for them to meet her outside the polls. That was above and beyond Brien, nicely done.

Brien, you should find this interesting that my subdivision's theme is "explorers" since you are somewhat one yourself. There's Loftus, Marin, Langlade, LaSalle, Raddison, Cortez, Joliet, DeSoto, Jonathan, Marquette, Nicolet, Andrae, Guerin, Piccard, Balboa, Magellan and the street I live on, Menard. Am I right?
