Mission: Possible's October Episode Schedule Announced

By Lieutenant Mike Glider

Police Department Cable Show Information

MISSION: POSSIBLE-Episode Forty-three

Episode forty-three talks about everyone's favorite topics...roundabouts.  We will replay a segment from last year where we talked with Al Gilbertson, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project manager for the Moorland/I-43 reconstruction.  He will tell us why the state is building these roundabouts, how to negotiate them and what the future holds for New Berlin (hint.....three more roundabouts.)

After that, Officer Chris Bayley and Sgt. Ron Mizia talk about car/deer accidents, including where they are happening in New Berlin and how to avoid hitting a deer while driving.

Next, Officer Tony Fus interviews Tanya Tridle from New Berlin Park and Rec. Department about the city's Halloween Party on October 26th and also about Fright Night for the older kids on October 31st.

After that, School Resource Officer Tony Pine gathers up some costumed New Berlin West students to tell the young viewers about Trick or Treat Safety.  Trick or Treat is coming up on Sunday, October 26th, from 4pm to 7pm.

To finish up this episode, we'll stop down at Buy Seasons, a huge internet costume distributor based in New Berlin.  They recently held their first annual Safety Day and our cameras were there to catch all the action.

You can get the monthly show schedule on the city's website at http://www.newberlin.org/.  Click on "Police Department" and then click on "Mission: Possible" or check in the New Berlin/Muskego NOW newspaper (first issue of each month has the current episode's topics and schedule.)   You can also go to the New Berlin NOW website at http://www.newberlinnow.com/ to get a monthly schedule.  Each episode of Mission: Possible is also available at the New Berlin Public Library on DVD for you to check out.

New Berlin Police Department's "Just Drive" Public Service Announcement Debuts

By Lieutenant Mike Glider
Wednesday, Sep 24 2008, 03:15 PM
The New Berlin Police Department recently produced a two minute public service announcement aimed at younger drivers warning them of the consequences of drinking and driving, talking on the cell phone while driving and texting while driving.  The PSA is titled "Just Drive" and was created using footage from a mock drunk driving crash that was staged at New Berlin Eisenhower High School last April. The video will air on New Berlin's government channel (Time Warner cable channel 25) and will soon be posted on YouTube.  Please check it out and have your teenagers watch it too.  Click on this link to watch the video: http://www.newberlinnow.com/story/index.aspx?id=794845

September Mission: Possible Schedule Announced

By Lieutenant Mike Glider
Monday, Sep 1 2008, 02:05 PM

Police Department Cable Show Information

  September, 2008: Episode 42

Episode forty-two takes us to Valley View Park's archery range, where Lt. Jeff Hingiss is back once again to talk about bow hunting range safety requirements, hunting regulations and the bow hunting permit process for New Berlin.

Next, Sgt. Ron Mizia, head of the police department's motorcycle unit, stops by Hal's Harley Davidson during Harley's 105th Celebration.  Ron will talk with owner's Hal and Kirk Toepel about their dealership and their connection with the New Berlin Police Department.

After that, School Resource Officers Paul Kaye and Tony Pine will give students some back to school tips for the 2008/2009 school year.  Their focus will be on grades 7-12.

Then we head back to the New Berlin Wal-Mart store to accept a check for $1,000 that will be used for our Traffic Pre-emption Device fundraiser.  This fundraiser's goal is to outfit all controlled intersections with devices that turn the traffic lights green for emergency vehicles shaving seconds and even minutes off emergency response times.

To finish up this episode, Tony Fus stops by at the new fire station groundbreaking ceremony and talks with Fire Chief Ed Dobernig about the new Racine Avenue station.

Thefts From Vehicles on the Rise

By Lieutenant Mike Glider
Thursday, Aug 14 2008, 09:10

One of my jobs in the Community Services Division at the New Berlin Police Department is crime statistics and mapping.  Dan Hanlon and I read through every police report as Dan compiles his monthly e-mail update and our crime maps on http://www.crimereports.com/.  I update the property crime map that the officers and sergeants use to track where crimes such as theft, burglary and vandalism are occurring.  They use this information to look for patterns and trends in property crime so that extra patrol can be given to the areas where the most crimes are being committed.

So far this year, we have taken 76 reports of thefts from vehicles.  I've compiled some statistics that may be of interest.  Of these 76 cases, 25 of the vehicles were locked and 51 were unlocked.  In all cases of locked vehicles being entered, a window was smashed to make entry.  In 17 of these 25 cases, the theft occurred at a public place, such as a theater, restaurant, or a workplace in the industrial park.  Four of the 25 cases occurred in apartment complex parking lots, meaning that only four vehicles were broken into in residential driveways.  Thieves do not like to break glass in residential neighborhoods.  It makes too much noise and they do not want to draw attention to themselves.  They usually only break glass when they see something that has a high resale value that draws their attention.  Please keep your valuables out of sight.  Taking the item with you when you leave the car is the best option, locking it in your trunk would be second.  The last option, and the one most people are going to utilize, would be to put the item in the glove box or under a seat to keep it out of sight.

The problem is, the thieves don't have to break the glass on most cars, because they are left unlocked.  I never ceased to be amazed at what type of stuff is taken from unlocked cars, many of them left out in a residential driveway overnight.  The most common items taken are GPS units, satellite radios, I-pods, wallets, purses and after-market car stereos.  In cases where purses and wallets are taken, the loss of your credit cards, driver's license and other identification is a much bigger hassle than losing the cash.  A great deal of the overnight residential thefts from vehicles suspects are just neighborhood kids looking for change.  They will seize the opportunity and take more if you leave it unsecured in your car.

Although New Berlin is one of the safest communities to live in and has a very low crime rate, sometimes we get too complacent with our valuables and they end up being taken from us.  Please lock your car and keep your valuables out of sight.

National Night Out 2008

By Officer Tony Fus
Tuesday, Jul 22 2008, 09:48

National Night Out is Tuesday, August 5, 2008.  The purpose of National Night Out is to promote crime prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood ties, and send a message to criminals that New Berlin residents care about their neighborhoods and will not tolerate crime.

On National Night Out, please turn on your outside lights and take some time to meet with your neighbors.  Also, as our city has seen an increase in burglaries and continues to experience thefts from vehicles, this night should serve as a reminder to remove your valuables from your car and call our department (262-782-6640) on all suspicious persons and vehicles.

If you would like to find out more about our Neighborhood Watch program or start one on your block, contact Officer Tony Fus at 262-780-8148 or fus@nbpolice.org.

Beware of "Police" Charities Solicitations

By Lieutenant Mike Glider
Tuesday, Jul 8 2008, 03:33 PM

Our department has recently been fielding several calls from citizens asking about police and sheriff's charities that are asking for donations over the phone.  While several of these charities may be legitimate, some are not.  Many of these charities are national organizations and the New Berlin Police Department does not see any of the money you donate.  The New Berlin Police Department does not solicit donations from citizens by phone, mail, e-mail, or in person.  If you have questions or concerns about a solicitation, please contact myself, Dan Hanlon or Tony Fus at the police department and we can look into the situation.  Please get the name of the soliciting organization, the caller's name, and a mailing address and phone number for the organization so you can pass that information on to us.

While we do not solicit donations from citizens, several of you have approached us and asked about making a donation to the department in general or to a specific program, such as the K-9 program, the SWAT team, bike patrol, youth programs, etc.  Donations are always welcome and citizens wishing to make a donation to the police department should contact Chief Joseph Rieder at (262) 780-8102 or Lt. Mike Glider at (262) 780-8109.

Action Packed 40th Episode of Mission: Possible Announced

By Lieutenant Mike Glider
Tuesday, Jul 1 2008, 11:46

Police Department Cable Show Information

MISSION: POSSIBLE-Episode Forty

The 40th episode of Mission: Possible lets you run radar and laser in an effort to reduce speed related accidents by slowing drivers down on the main roads and the subdivisions.  We will ride along in the squad with Officer Mike Saddy as he explains what it's like to be on his end of the radar gun.

Next, Officer Tony Fus provides us with a video overview of the recent Citizen's Academy.  He will briefly talk about each week of the course and finish with the graduation.  If you are considering signing up for the academy, don't miss this segment.

After that, Tony gives us a rare treat when his D.A.R.E. school, Glen Park, had the recent honor of having a Blackhawk helicopter land on their playground and give tours of the aircraft to all the students.

Next, it's off to United Heartland, where the employees donated over $800 to several youth programs run by the police department, including D.A.R.E., Midnight Volleyball, Midnight Basketball, and the Youth Academy.

Speaking of Midnight Volleyball, we'll talk to several participants in this summer's first session of the popular program.  We'll also meet the designer of this year's shirts, Katie Potts, who recently graduated from Eisenhower.

To finish up, we'll stop by the D.A.R.E. graduations at Glen Park, Elmwood, and Ronald Reagan schools and see the graduates celebrate their special day.
