Action Packed 40th Episode of Mission: Possible Announced

By Lieutenant Mike Glider
Tuesday, Jul 1 2008, 11:46 AM

Police Department Cable Show Information

MISSION: POSSIBLE-Episode Forty

The 40th episode of Mission: Possible lets you run radar and laser in an effort to reduce speed related accidents by slowing drivers down on the main roads and the subdivisions.  We will ride along in the squad with Officer Mike Saddy as he explains what it's like to be on his end of the radar gun.

Next, Officer Tony Fus provides us with a video overview of the recent Citizen's Academy.  He will briefly talk about each week of the course and finish with the graduation.  If you are considering signing up for the academy, don't miss this segment.

After that, Tony gives us a rare treat when his D.A.R.E. school, Glen Park, had the recent honor of having a Blackhawk helicopter land on their playground and give tours of the aircraft to all the students.

Next, it's off to United Heartland, where the employees donated over $800 to several youth programs run by the police department, including D.A.R.E., Midnight Volleyball, Midnight Basketball, and the Youth Academy.

Speaking of Midnight Volleyball, we'll talk to several participants in this summer's first session of the popular program.  We'll also meet the designer of this year's shirts, Katie Potts, who recently graduated from Eisenhower.

To finish up, we'll stop by the D.A.R.E. graduations at Glen Park, Elmwood, and Ronald Reagan schools and see the graduates celebrate their special day.

You can get the monthly show schedule on the city's website at http://www.newberlin.org/.  Click on "Police Department" and then click on "Mission: Possible" or check in the New Berlin/Muskego NOW newspaper (first issue of each month has the current episode's topics and schedule.)   You can also go to the New Berlin NOW website at http://www.newberlinnow.com/ to get a monthly schedule.  Each episode of Mission: Possible is also available at the New Berlin Public Library on DVD for you to check out.

Fireworks Laws in New Berlin

By Officer Tony Fus
Thursday, Jun 26 2008, 04:28 PM

The New Berlin Police Department wishes everyone a happy and safe Independence Day.  In order to ensure everyone remains safe during the days surrounding this holiday, we will be aggressively enforcing the Wisconsin state statutes and local ordinances pertaining to fireworks.  Person(s) found in violation are subject to being cited and having their fireworks confiscated and destroyed.

City ordinances prohibit the sale, use and possession of any fireworks in the City of New Berlin except by a person possessing a firework's user permit issued by the City of New Berlin.  Permits obtained from vendors are not legal or recognized in the City of New Berlin.  The only fireworks legal to possess and use in the City of New Berlin are "sparklers" and "caps".  However, "sparklers" and "caps" are prohibited in all parks and parkways in the City of New Berlin.

Police Department Cable Show Information

               MISSION: POSSIBLE-Episode Thirty-nine

Episode 39 starts out with a bike safety discussion and demonstrations by members of the police department's bike patrol unit.

Next, our cameras stop down at the Target Store in New Berlin for Safety Saturday 2008.  We'll highlight all of the fun and excitement of the event and will interview several of the participants.

After that, it's off to the auditorium at Eisenhower, where Guidance Counselor Mary Jane Whitty, School Resource Officer Paul Kaye and the middle school student council staged "Operation Danielle."  This was a cooperative community wide effort to gather personal care items, drink mixes and other needed goodies for Army Spc. Danielle Quigley and her unit that is currently deployed in Baghdad.  Danielle is a 2006 graduate from Eisenhower and surprised the middle school students with a personal visit to Ike while she was home on leave.

To finish up, we'll stop by Poplar Creek and Orchard Lane Schools to check out their fifth grade D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduations.

Mission: Possible's May Lineup Includes Motorcycle and Bike Safety

By Lieutenant Mike Glider
Thursday, May 1 2008, 10:05 AM

Police Department Cable Show Information

               MISSION: POSSIBLE-Episode Thirty-eight

Episode 38 features an interview with Gary Hamblin from the Attorney General's Office.  One of Gary's duties is to oversee the three crime labs in Wisconsin.  He will tell us how the crime labs work with law enforcement to solve crimes and new issues that the crime labs are dealing with.

May is Motorcycle Safety Month and Sgt. Ron Mizia is back once again to talk about motorcycle safety.  Ron heads up the department's motorcycle unit and is also a motorcycle instructor for WCTC.  Ron will give cyclists equipment and clothing tips and also will narrate some live riding drills.

After that, we'll stop at Eisenhower High School, where a drunk driving crash was staged with the help of Froedtert Hospital to show students the effects of bad decision making.

To finish up this episode, a local competitive bike rider, Jeff Frings will talk about bike safety from a cyclist's perspective.  Jeff rides over 200 miles per week in New Berlin and surrounding areas and has had many close calls with vehicles.  He will emphasize the "three foot law" which is the minimum distance that vehicles should give bicyclists on the road.

Moorland Road Safety Concerns Addressed

By Lieutenant Mike Glider
Thursday, Apr 24 2008, 11:00 AM

You may have thought you saw more police cars along Moorland Road in the last month.  It wasn't your imagination.  Based on several e-mails and phone calls from concerned citizens, the New Berlin Police Department has been stepping up its enforcement of traffic violations along heavily traveled Moorland Road.  We are targeting all types of violations along Moorland Road, but have focused mainly on the busier intersections, where drivers have not been stopping for red and yellow lights, and have been making illegal u-turns.  In the last month alone, this increased enforcement has led to violators receiving 18 tickets and 34 warnings.  This is over and above the regular traffic enforcement on New Berlin's busiest roadway. The department plans to continue this increased presence over the summer months, when dry roads generally lead to increased speeds.  These increased speeds through busy intersections lead to the more serious accidents, usually involving injuries and even fatalities.  Please drive safely and don't forget to buckle up!
