Win and Lose

By Linda Richter
Sunday, Sep 28 2008, 11:06 PM

Sports-wise, it was an eventful weekend that was full of highs and lows.

The big news is that the Brewers won today!  It means the Brewers will be in the playoffs--the first time in 26 years! The Brew Crew beat the Cubs 3-1. CC Sabathia pitched a complete game. Ryan Braun had a 2-run homer.  The Mets lost their game today (giving the Wild Card to the Milwaukee Brewers)

Both New Berlin high school football teams scored big wins Friday night. NB Eisenhower beat Cudahy 54-13. New Berlin West trounced Wauwatosa West 63-20. See JS report.

That was terrific.  On the other hand:

Saturday’s UW football game was a real stinker. The Badgers blew a big lead. The Michigan Wolverines ended up beating the Badgers 27-25.

The Green Bay Packers were beaten by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today. The final score: Packers 21. Buccaneers 30.  Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who threw 3 interceptions, injured his right shoulder during the game.  A possible separated shoulder. Ouch.

By the way, ironman Brett Favre, who now plays for the NY Jets, had 6 touchdown passes today. The Jets beat the Arizona Cardinals 56-35.

Sunday Night Football

By Linda Richter
Sunday, Jul 13 2008, 12:15 AM

The spotlight is on football this weekend.

Brett Favre’s request to be released from the Packers has been widely reported and debated.

There’s been considerable speculation on how the Packers will deal with the messy situation/dilemma.

On a happier note, here’s some other football news:

Several teams in the Ironman Football League (a Semi-Pro league) will be playing at the Milwaukee Sports Complex, 6000 W. Ryan Road in Franklin on Sunday, July 13.

  • The New Berlin Panthers will take on the Milwaukee Venom at 5 pm .
  • Then at 8 pm, it will be Muskego Hitmen vs Fond du Lac Crusaders.

For more information about the IFL, the teams, or game schedule, consult www.ironmanfootballleague.com.

For Love Of The Game

By Linda Richter
Sunday, Jun 29 2008, 02:50 PM

The Muskego Hitmen played against the New Berlin Panthers at Carroll College Saturday night. The score was 40-0 in favor of the Hitmen. Both teams are in the National Conference of the Ironman Football League.

The Ironman Football League was created in 1996 by Chris Chudada of Pewaukee, Wisconsin. It is known as the “working man’s NFL”. The players, team owners, and team personnel have jobs outside the league and do not get paid to play. They play for love of the game.

The IFL provides adults coming out of high school or college the opportunity to play organized competitive contact football in a stadium atmosphere. It’s also for people interested in coaching, owning a team, or pursuing league employment opportunities.

This league is much more than athletes getting together to play football. Professionalism and community involvement are emphasized. The Ironman Football League is a quality, thriving semi-pro league with dedicated players and personnel.

Teams in the IFL National Conference include Fond du lac Crusaders, Spring City Cyclones, Madison Mustangs, West Allis Predators, Milwaukee Venom, Muskego Hitmen and New Berlin Panthers.

The American Conference teams in the IFL are Burlington Blue Devils, Rock County Gladiators, St. Francis Monarchs, McHenry County Pirates, Roscoe Rush and Wauwatosa Spartans.

Experience the excitement of football in summer. Come out and watch a game next weekend. Most of the teams will be playing next Saturday, July 5. The Mustangs vs. Venom game is scheduled for July 6. Consult the Ironman Football League Web site for information about the league and teams, including the schedule, game locations and site maps

Congratulations & Announcement

By Linda Richter
Friday, Jun 13 2008, 08:08 AM

Congratulations to:

Eisenhower’s Softball team--the Division 2 State Softball Champions. The team was recognized at Monday’s School Board meeting. Coach Jeff Setz gave a speech thanking the girls and touting their efforts and accomplishments. He called them champions both on and off the field. A wonderful tribute, indeed.

Boys Tennis Division Qualifiers

New Berlin West Boys Track Qualifiers for the WIAA State Track Tournament

Elementary School Chess Club (Elmwood, Glen Park, Orchard Lane, Ronald Reagan Schools )--national award winners. Coach Randy Bubolz took 38 chess players to Pittsburg and came back with 6 team trophies and 6 individual trophies. At Monday’s Board Meeting, Elmwood principal Jo Boardman thanked and praised Mr. Bubloz, a community member, (who was not present) for his volunteer service and chess team’s achievements.

Eisenhower and New Berlin West students graduating Saturday

New Berlin West’s graduation ceremony is on June 14 at l:30 pm in the NBW Field house.

The Eisenhower graduation ceremony, which is also on June 14, has been re-located to a Church and the time changed.

The following announcement is posted on the NBPS web site:

Updated June 11, 2008.   Due to recent heavy rains, the Eisenhower High School stadium field is unusable for commencement ceremonies. The original alternate location was the high school gymnasium. Those who have attended an indoor ceremony there in the past largely agree that this is not a comfortable venue for a dignified commencement ceremony. No air conditioning, difficult steps and risers, and a tight limit on the number of guests all make this a less-than-desirable location. Fortunately, a much more suitable and comfortable location for June 14, 2008 has been secured, even on short notice.

Commencement will now be held at  Elmbrook Church, 777 South Barker Road, Brookfield.  The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. (originally 1:30 p.m.)

Recognition: Wayne Hamilton, 2008 Citizen of the Year

By Linda Richter
Monday, May 12 2008, 12:44 PM

Congratulations to Wayne Hamilton, who was presented with the 2008 Citizen of the Year award* on April 22 by Mayor Chiovatero.

Gary Drinan nominated him, maintaining that Wayne Hamilton was deserving of this honor because of his active involvement in New Berlin youth sports for over 41 years.

Mr. Drinan’s compelling nomination letter conveyed that Wayne Hamilton-----

  • Is an upstanding citizen, committed volunteer, Korean War Veteran, married 52 years to Audrey and has 5 children, 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
  • Joined the New Berlin Youth Athletic Program (NBYAP) in 1967
  • Volunteered for the newly created New Berlin Athletic Association (NBAA) Board in 1972, which succeeded NBYAP and continues to be an active board member
  • Besides his duties on NBAA Board, served as county coordinator for youth sports from 1975-1987
  • In his 41 year association with NBAA, has coached, recruited others to coach (boys and girls sports---baseball, basketball, soccer, wrestling, track and bowling)--and coordinated award dinners & ceremonies, including arranging for prominent speakers. Echoes the NBAA philosophy: “The NBAA was formed to give all kids a chance to play. There is no cutting. If they come out to play, they make the team.”

    In addition---

  • New Berlin Lakes Baseball, Inc. was formed in 1971 to serve talented youth and adults who wished to play baseball after high school. In 1972, it combined with NBYAP to form the NBAA. Wayne Hamilton not only played on the team for 2 years, he managed it for 3 years, winning the Land O’Lakes Grand Championship in 1977.
  • In 1977, Wayne Hamilton assumed the General Manager position, helping the team secure financing and to keep it functioning to the present. He worked closely with the City Parks and Recreation Department and NBAA board to keep the hardball diamond at Malone Park in excellent playing condition, installing modern lighting and reconditioning the playing field with a new drainage system and playing surface. Wayne Hamilton was inducted into the Land O’ Lakes Hall of Fame in 2004.

* Nominations for Citizen of the Year are judged by the Mayor’s Office and City Clerk on this criteria: Contribution to community welfare; Civic achievement; Contribution of something of a lasting effect on the community; Volunteerism; Enrichment of the cultural, civic, and youth facilities of the City of New Berlin.

A Chilling Finish

By Linda Richter
Monday, Jan 21 2008, 12:03 AM

To the disappointment of Green Bay Packers fans, the New York Giants beat the Packers in overtime at Sunday's NFC Championship Game.

So, it will be the Giants, not the Packers versus the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Despite the sub-zero temperatures at Lambeau Field, Giants quarterback Eli Manning played remarkably well.  Although Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes missed 2 field goals during the game, he redeemed himself in the final minutes by kicking a 47- yard field goal that put the Giants on top 23-20.

The Packers had home-field advantage. The Packers did not play error-free: several penalties were called against Packer players.  The Giants effectively shut down the Packers running game. Brett Favre had two touch downs, but also two interceptions. The last pass Favre threw was intercepted; shortly afterward, Tynes scored the game-winning field goal for the Giants.

The Packers missed several opportunities to win. It was a disappointing team performance and finish to an otherwise sensational Packers season.

Brrrrrrrrr Game Day

By Linda Richter
Saturday, Jan 19 2008, 09:55 PM

Last Saturday’s Packers game in Green Bay was amazing.

The Packers trounced the Seattle Seahawks 42-20. That victory propelled the Packers to Sunday’s (Jan. 20) NFC Championship Game against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field.

It was all the more impressive because the Packers’ resounding win was achieved despite a bad start (they were down 14-0 after only the first four minutes of play) and poor weather conditions: snow, snow, and more snow.

The Packers will have to contend with a different weather hurdle for Sunday's Packers-Giants game:  frigid temperatures (around zero degrees) are being forecast--and that's not including the wind chill factor.  Brrrrrrr.

Packers fans throughout Wisconsin will be watching this game, rooting for their team-- hoping the Packers play well, triumph over the bitter cold, and defeat their opponent.

Having the Packers play in the next Super Bowl would be so AWESOME.

GO PACKERS!!!!!

NFL objections

By Linda Richter
Saturday, Jan 12 2008, 02:28 AM

The NFL playoff game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks is today.  Go Pack Go!!!

But isn’t it a shame that the NFL won’t let football fans watch the game on the big screen at theaters?

According to the Jan. 6 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the NFL confirmed it sent cease-and-desist letters to three businesses: Marcus Corp. ( Palladium at Majestic Theater in Brookfield), Rosebud Cinema Drafthouse in Wauwatosa, and Potawatomi Bingo and Casino.   NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy argued the businesses were violating copyright law and NFL policies that ban mass out-of-town viewing of NFL games. The news story’s last paragraph says,  “McCarthy said theaters were showing games on ‘huge screens that can attract 50 to 500 people watching the games. Talk to your local TV affiliates, who will say those types of events take away from their ratings. That’s what this is about,’ he said.”

Oh. It’s about TV ratings?!!!

A Wauwatosa resident contends it’s about greed. In his letter to the editor “NFL shows it’s all about greed”, published in the Jan. 9 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel,  Jeff Kartz writes “…Now local theaters have been told to stop showing Green Bay Packers games for fear of being dragged to court by the NFL? It’s not good enough that taxpayers have to build their stadiums, pay good money for their tickets and are considered unpatriotic unless they subscribe to the NFL Network? Now we can’t watch a broadcast of the game at our local theater? Maybe if the NFL made people pay for the privilege or got a commission on popcorn, the league would go for it.”…

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (Jan. 11) reports that at least three theaters in the state (Rivoli in La Crosse, Majestic in Madison, and Fox Bay Cinema Grill in Whitefish Bay) plan to show Saturday’s playoff game on the big screen. Of course, those plans could change.  In the news article,  (NFL spokesman) Brian McCarthy claims that warning letters were sent to the owners of the theaters. And that “.. The league is arguing that showing the games on big screens violates copyright law. The league says businesses that offer such showings are creating a special event, which is unlawful. That makes it different from sports bars, according to McCarthy. The league makes exceptions for bars that show games on a daily basis.”

Huh? It makes exceptions for bars that show games daily?!!!   It's OK for bars but not theaters to show NFL games?  Occasional "special events" are no-no's but airing games daily is fine?  That seems a bit screwy.

The  NFL also considers it OK for bars but not churches to show games?

Greg Kowalski’s “Today’s Concerns” FranklinNOW blog post called “Goodbye to Packer games in theaters”  informs us that the NFL refused to allow a church to air the Super Bowl game last year.

For Football Fans

By Linda Richter
Sunday, Dec 23 2007, 01:28 AM

My son Ryan is a UW-Whitewater grad. Our family was excited and happy that the Whitewater Warhawks football team beat the formidable Mount Union Purple Raiders last weekend ----and won the NCAA Division III National Championship!

Congratulations UW-Whitewater!!!

More information about the Warhawks can be found on:  warhawkfootball.com

Want to purchase some championship apparel? The University of Wisconsin Whitewater’s web site provides helpful information/links.

Of course,  this has been an exciting season for the Packers and Brett Favre, too.  Sunday is Game Day: Packers vs. Bears in Chicago. Green Bay's record is 12-2, and one of those 2 losses was to the Bears.  Hopefully, today's Packers-Bears re-match will result in a Packers win and 13-2 record.

Go Pack!!!!

On Friday, it was New Berlin Eisenhower vs New Berlin West. At half-time, the football score was 13-13. Final score: Eisenhower Lions 26. West Vikings 16.

Saturday’s Badger football game in Madison was a real nail-biter. The UW Badgers hung on to beat the Michigan State Spartans 37-34.

The Green Bay Packers not only outscored the Minnesota Vikings 23-16 today (Sunday) at the Metrodome, Brett Favre surpassed Dan Marino to become the NFL’s all-time leader in career touchdown passes.

And the Milwaukee Brewers ended their baseball season above .500 for the first time since 1992!

Football Talk and More

By Linda Richter
Friday, Feb 2 2007, 10:40 PM
What an exciting start to this football weekend!

Brett Favre’s announcement that he’ll be back this 07 season is sure to delight Packer fans in Wisconsin and elsewhere.

My husband phoned our sons this afternoon to tell them the happy news.

And that's not all. The Super Bowl is this Sunday!
Bears vs. Colts.
Our family will be rooting for the Colts at this year’s Super Bowl party.
Whatever happens on the football field, it will be hard to top the excitement of the Super Bowl party that our niece gave last year.

At that event, she disclosed that her mom ( Patricia) was among the four principals to be chosen and honored as 2006 Principals of the Year by the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Patricia was later selected to be one of the finalists for 2007 National Principal of the Year. For more about the program click on these links:

Badgers Triumph

By Linda Richter
Friday, Jan 5 2007, 01:46 AM
Gotta love those UW Badgers!

The University of Wisconsin football team's 17-14 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks on New Year‘s Day marked the second year in a row that the Badgers beat a Southeastern Conference opponent at the Capitol One Bowl.

It was also the 12th game the Badgers won this season. Their only loss was at Michigan.

Impressive.

On New Year’s Day, football reigns. It was football, football, football at our house. Friends and family---including our oldest son, who is a UW grad, and four of his UW alumni buddies--- gathered at our place to watch the nationally televised Capitol One Bowl game. All of us rooted for the Badgers and were happy they won.

We are looking forward to the Badgers’ 2007 season.
