Stuffed:

Me, too. Not a surprise. Thanksgiving dinner at my house included turkey, stuffing, cranberries, fruit medley, corn, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, cranberry bread, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and other goodies.
Gathering with family, relaxing, and sharing a meal. Celebrating and reflecting. Giving thanks. What a great American tradition.
I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving holiday.
Next up is the mad dash, shop-till-you-drop post-Thanksgiving day frenzy known as Black Friday. Such stressful activity will likely burn up a few calories.

In a previous blog entry, I expressed appreciation for the free meal that Applebee's provided veterans on Veterans Day.
And now, I'd like to thank Golden Corral for the free dinner that it provided to veterans on Monday, November 17. There was a big turnout at the Waukesha restaurant despite that night's icy road conditions. My husband (a Vietnam War veteran), several of our friends who had served in the military and their spouses, and I were among the many who attended the event.

How nice of Applebee’s Restaurants in Wisconsin to honor US veterans and active military for service to their country by offering them a free meal on Veterans Day.
My husband (a Vietnam War veteran) and I had lunch today at our local Applebee’s, which is located at 15505 W. Rock Ridge Road, New Berlin.
He wore his Air Force fatigue shirt to the restaurant and was pleased that it still fit after 40+ years.

Earlier this month, John McCain was booed by his supporters at a Republican rally. (See Fox News article )
Sarah Palin was "resoundingly" booed at the October 11 Flyers vs. Rangers National Hockey League game. The owner of the Philadelphia Flyers team had invited her to drop the ceremonial first puck of the Flyer’s opener. (See New York Times article)
Is there any acceptable excuse for those mobs to exhibit such disrespectful, boorish behavior?

My husband and I own a Harley. We were pleased that many motorcycle enthusiasts flocked to Southeastern Wisconsin for Harley-Davidson’s 105th Anniversary celebration. Some traveled great distances. One couple we met had come all the way from Australia. They bought their Harley in California and biked here from San Francisco, stopping along the way at Sturgis to get married.
In Milwaukee, there were motorcycle races inside a 14 ft.diameter steel cage and an exciting police riding skills competition. New products, including several 2009 Harley bikes were displayed. An exhibit traced the history of Harley-Davidson.
Music was plentiful.
Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band’s 3 ½ hour Lakefront concert on Saturday was high-energy and absolutely outstanding. American Idol’s Amanda Overmyer rocked on the Summerfest Grounds. We enjoyed her performance. We also loved ZZ Top, although it was a tight squeeze in the Miller Lite Oasis, which was packed to capacity.
The Harley rally brought numerous visitors to Milwaukee and motorcycles galore on its roads.
Signs at several area businesses welcomed bikers.
Waukesha put out the welcome mat to motorcyclists. During its Harley-Davidson Weekend in Waukesha fest, some streets were closed to provide parking for motorcycles. There were free band concerts at Cutler Park. We attended the BoDeans, Foghat, and Blues Traveler performances there.
Here in New Berlin, Hals Harley-Davidson was hopping with musical entertainment. Vendors on site sold food, apparel, motorcycle accessories and even faux tatoos.
Harley-Davidson’s 105th Anniversary was a real blast--good for Wisconsin and Wisconsin businesses. Now that the party is over, it's not surprising that many people are looking forward to the next one--the 110th. It was such a success, some folks would like to see a bikers rally held annually in our state.

Anyone who thinks Summerfest is just for kids is mistaken. It attracts people of all different ages. I saw many folks in my age bracket (mid-fifties) or older at Summerfest yesterday.
On the Summerfest grounds, you can find family activities, numerous food and beverage vendors, places to shop, several permanent ground stage areas and more. (Don’t miss the Harley-Davidson Roadhouse. It’s a beaut! )
And of course, music, music, music. Summerfest is advertised as the world’s largest music festival. It has a variety of music acts and performers.
Summerfest 2008 kicked off its 11-day run Thursday with a music lineup that included Stevie Wonder, Lee Ann Rimes, Eric Burdon & the Animals, and Cross Canadian Ragweed. Quite a music mix.
The weather was hot and muggy, but after all the heavy rain Mother Nature dumped on us Wisconsinites recently, the sunshine was most welcome.

Father’s Day, a day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood, is traditionally held on the third Sunday in June.
There is much information on the internet about this special day.
For example, check out these sites:
USA.gov offers fun facts and tips for Father’s Day by the US government.
Fathers.com National Center for Fathering is another interesting Web site. It’s mission: to improve the well-being of children. Men seeking to strengthen their parenting skills may find it a useful resource.

In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14. Since then, Americans have commemorated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes by celebrating June 14 as Flag Day. (Prior to 1916, some states and localities had been celebrating the day for years)
In a recent statement from the White House, President Bush urges all Americans to observe Flag Day and National Flag Week by flying the Stars and Stripes from their homes and other appropriate places, and to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Click here to read President Bush’s June 6 proclamation regarding Flag Day, Flag Week, and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.
The American flag, our national symbol, is displayed at Federal government buildings on June 14 (Flag Day) and during National Flag Week (the week during which June 14 occurs).
The Pledge of Allegiance, an oath of loyalty to our flag and country, is recited at many public events, such as School Board and City Council meetings.
For anyone (such as School Board official Keith Heun) confused by, forgetful of, or who doesn’t know the words of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, it is as follows:
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
According to various internet sources, the Pledge of Allegiance was first published in 1892 in The Youth's Companion magazine in Boston, Massachusetts. It was worded as: “ I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.” It was revised about 30 years later with the words “the flag of the United States of America” replacing the phrase “my Flag.” In 1954, Congress and President Dwight Eisenhower added the words “under God” to the pledge.

Congratulations to:
Eisenhower’s Softball team--the Division 2 State Softball Champions. The team was recognized at Monday’s School Board meeting. Coach Jeff Setz gave a speech thanking the girls and touting their efforts and accomplishments. He called them champions both on and off the field. A wonderful tribute, indeed.
Boys Tennis Division Qualifiers
New Berlin West Boys Track Qualifiers for the WIAA State Track Tournament
Elementary School Chess Club (Elmwood, Glen Park, Orchard Lane, Ronald Reagan Schools )--national award winners. Coach Randy Bubolz took 38 chess players to Pittsburg and came back with 6 team trophies and 6 individual trophies. At Monday’s Board Meeting, Elmwood principal Jo Boardman thanked and praised Mr. Bubloz, a community member, (who was not present) for his volunteer service and chess team’s achievements.
Eisenhower and New Berlin West students graduating Saturday
New Berlin West’s graduation ceremony is on June 14 at l:30 pm in the NBW Field house.
The Eisenhower graduation ceremony, which is also on June 14, has been re-located to a Church and the time changed.
The following announcement is posted on the NBPS web site:
Updated June 11, 2008. Due to recent heavy rains, the Eisenhower High School stadium field is unusable for commencement ceremonies. The original alternate location was the high school gymnasium. Those who have attended an indoor ceremony there in the past largely agree that this is not a comfortable venue for a dignified commencement ceremony. No air conditioning, difficult steps and risers, and a tight limit on the number of guests all make this a less-than-desirable location. Fortunately, a much more suitable and comfortable location for June 14, 2008 has been secured, even on short notice.
Commencement will now be held at Elmbrook Church, 777 South Barker Road, Brookfield. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. (originally 1:30 p.m.)

Wisconsin, already reeling from all the rain we’ve gotten recently, has more rain forecast for this week. Basement or other rooms flooded? There are several sources of information about flooding cleanup available via the internet.
The US. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) web site advises:
- Flood water can make the air in your home unhealthy. When things get wet for more than 2 days they usually get moldy.
- Failure to remove contaminated materials and to reduce moisture and humidity can present serious long-term health risks. Standing water and wet materials are a breeding ground for microorganisms, such as viruses, bacteria, and mold. They can cause disease, trigger allergic reactions, and continue to damage materials long after the flood.
- Mold may be more likely to make some people with asthma, allergies or other breathing problems sick. Consult your doctor or other health care professional if you have questions about cleaning or working in a home that has been flooded.
- Throw away anything that was wet with flood water and can’t be cleaned.
- During cleanup, wear goggles without vent holes, gloves, boots, long-sleeve shirt and pants.
- Wear an N-95 respirator (not a dust mask or handkerchief) over your mouth and nose, so that you do not breathe in a lot of mold. You should be able to find N-95 respirators at hardware stores.
- Because power sometimes goes out during flooding, some people use portable generators for electricity during cleanup. The EPA advises against using portable generators inside buildings. It warns that fumes, from a portable generator could kill you in minutes if you breathe it in. Use portable generators outside and far away form buildings.

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas are declaring Saturday, May 31, 2008 “Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties Support Our Troops Day”.
Two events to remember our troops from the past and present will be held that day---
The first event is the 2008 Ride for the Wheelchair Games, a motorcycle rally to raise awareness and funds to send Wisconsin paralyzed veterans to the 28th National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Omaha, Nebraska.* This year's motorcycle procession will pass veterans memorials and military sites throughout Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. It is scheduled to pass New Berlin’s Memorial (located on National Ave. and Casper) on May 31 in the morning. ( approx. 10:25)
Ride itinerary:
- 8:00-9:15 am Check-in at House of Harley-Davidson (6221 W. Layton Ave.)
- 9:15 am Ride to VA Medical Center for Parade on VA grounds
- 10 am Ride to Bartolotta’s Lake Park Bistro and places that honor veterans
- 3 pm Leave Bartolotta’s
- 3:30 pm Arrive at Reclaiming Our Heritage on VA grounds (optional)
The cost: $30 per single rider; $50 per couple
Pre-registration is required for the Ride. Only 100 bikes will be allowed. To pre-register, call 414 328-8910. For more information (or to view a video of previous Rides) contact the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) at www.wisconsinpva.org/events .
* The National Veterans Wheelchair Games is advertised as the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world. It is a multi-event sports and rehabilitation program for military service veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations, or certain neurological problems. For more information about it click on the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs web site.
The second event is Reclaiming Our Heritage. Admission is free to this living history event. There will be encampments from all the major military eras in U.S. history (from pre-Revolutionary War colonial militia up to the present era). This special event, which is located on the VA grounds (5000 W. National Ave.), honors veterans and educates the public about our veterans’ contributions and sacrifices. For more information about it and the many other family activities planned for the Reclaiming Our Heritage weekend, such as the Positively Patriotic Parade, click here.

On this special day for mothers, I'd like to share the following* -------
M-O-T-H-E-R
"M" is for the million things she gave me, "O" means only that she's growing old, "T" is for the tears she shed to save me, "H" is for her heart of purest gold; "E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining, "R" means right, and right she'll always be, Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER," A word that means the world to me.

Now that I'm back from my Florida trip, in my spare time I've been trying to catch up on the local news. One news item stood out from the rest --the announcement of an agreement on the Great Lakes compact.
That announcement was a momentous event because of its importance and impact on New Berlin residents and so many others--- and because it was right here in New Berlin (City Hall) that Gov. Doyle, some mayors and legislators, business and environmental leaders had gathered to make the announcement.
I was pleased to see the news coverage of it.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and MyCommunity NOW had news articles, pictures.
New BerlinNOW blogger Audrey Juds (Then Again) did a fine piece titled Great Lakes Water.
In his FranklinNOW blog (Today’s Concerns), Greg Kowalski shared his thoughts about the compact and announcement.

New Berlin Citizens for Responsible Government (NBCRG) President Ralph Heun spouted lots of nonsense in the NBCRG March 7 blog entry. See my previous blog entry titled NBCRG Spin and Blunders.
In that March 7 NBCRG blog post, Ralph Heun complained that citizens and civic groups cannot use City Hall. He bemoaned the “short-sighted policy that has kept election forums, Christmas and July 4 parades and other events from being televised”--and he blamed Alderman Bill Moore for it. He accused Ald. Moore of being a prime instigator in passing an ordinance two years ago that prohibited any non-city group from using City Hall/or City Channel 25 for any purposes. What a distortion of facts! Actually, in 2006 Ald. Moore argued against and voted against the restrictive policy/resolution No. 06-11. Furthermore, Ald. Ken Harenda---whom NBCRG has chosen to endorse not only voted in favor of this awful policy/resolution that Heun has complained so bitterly about, he made the motion to approve it.
Let’s get something else straight: Ald. Dave Ament called the Feb. 16 meeting at City Hall, but it was for area residents--not only his own District #7 constituents. The meeting dealt with Coffee Road changes, as well as sidewalks, side paths or bike trails in various areas of the City. Heun’s statement that Ald. Poshepny (District #5) was not shouted down is untrue. When Ald. Poshepny attempted to speak, some members of the audience rudely yelled out. I witnessed that. Heun admits that Ald. Ament asked Ald. Poshepny not to speak. And yet, others at the meeting were allowed to speak.
Perhaps if NBCRG President Ralph Heun had not stood beside Ald. Ament at the front of the room, facing and addressing the audience, for part of the meeting --which did occur-- it would not have appeared so much like a NBCRG meeting or political rally. Interesting that Ralph Heun, the president of a political action group, was allowed to do that and grandstand, but the 5th District alderman who tried to speak during the meeting was silenced and not permitted to speak! A so-called “informational meeting”-- that prevents someone--an elected official-- from asking questions or providing information? Does that serve the public's best interests? Well, the format gave Heun the opportunity to spew negative comments about the Transportation Committee, sidewalks, etc.
If it was just an “informational meeting” as Heun contends, why was there a stack of inflammatory “Just Say No” fliers opposed to sidewalks (and referring to a petition) prominently displayed on a table inside the meeting room ( by the entry), a petition for people to sign--as well as two individuals seated at the table, apparently to assist them?
And why wasn't a City traffic engineer invited to the meeting? Kudos to him for coming to the meeting anyway (it was held on a Saturday) to answer people’s questions. Ald. Ament introduced the City traffic engineer, but acknowledged during the meeting that he hadn’t invited him.
Heun also maintained in the NBCRG blog entry that Ray McInerny, Sr. is president of a small group that apparently is not active as they claim to be exempt from state law requiring that expenditures over $25 must be reported to the City Clerk. What a bogus accusation!
Ray’s group formed late last year. It’s an active group whose membership is growing. Heun misrepresented the facts: State law requires that a group that is supporting or opposing candidates (political action group) be registered with the City Clerk before making expenditures over $25. Ray’s group registered in October -- before it even knew who would be running for office in April (candidates had until Jan. 2 to file to get their name on the ballot) and is in compliance with that law. As for filing an exemption: Political action groups and candidates are eligible for exemption from filing campaign finance reports if they don’t anticipate accepting contributions or making disbursements totaling more than $1000 in a calendar year and don’t accept more than $100 from a single source during the calendar year. Local candidates typically claim exemption status. New Berlin candidates for local public office (including those endorsed by NBCRG) often claim exemption from filing . Independent committees have to file itemized campaign finance reports. In 2008, when Ray’s group decided to support a specific candidate--it filed as an “independent committee” and filed the appropriate reports by the reporting deadline as the law requires.
Ironically, Ralph Heun stated, “ If Mr. McInerny does not know the facts, He should not make the complaints”. Mr. Heun should follow his own advice.

Attention: New Berlin School District residents and parents
If you want a better understanding of school district finances and your taxes---or have questions---don’t miss the one hour presentation given by New Berlin Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Paul Kreutzer at 7 pm on Wednesday, March 12. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.
The topics will include:
- how taxes are derived
- comparison data
- budgetary priorities
- future fiscal planning.
This financial presentation and Q&A session will be conducted at New Berlin West Performing Arts Center, 18695 W. Cleveland Ave.
According to the NBPS District web site, Dr. Kreutzer will be available after his presentation until all questions have been answered.
Dr. Kreutzer did a slideshow presentation on school finance at the October 8 School Board Meeting that was impressive, fact-filled, and down-to-earth. I expect his March 12 presentation will be as interesting and informative.
