Speaking of Candidate Forums.....

By Linda Richter

Alderman Dave Ament was sitting in the audience at today’s candidate forum at New Berlin West School.  Isn‘t that rather hypocritical?   Dave Ament, you may recall, was one of four New Berlin aldermen in 2006 who voted to limit the use of City Hall facilities to government units, thus barring citizen groups from using them. Their action put an end to voters forums at City Hall.

Whenever I think about voters forums in our community,  I remember Jean Crotty, who died last year at age 82.  She ran candidate forums for many years. Several years ago, Ms. Crotty asked if I would assist her with an aldermanic forum she was having and moderating at City Hall. The forum would be broadcast on the City cable channel. Ms. Crotty simply wanted me to operate the camera.  Although this task was unpaid and meant giving up some hours of my time on a Saturday, I was happy to help her out and said yes. A few days later, Ms. Crotty called again.  Sounding terribly distraught and apologizing multiple times, she told me that Ted Wysocki, who was mayor at the time, objected to my assisting her with the forum and told her to get someone else. I felt very sorry for Ms. Crotty, who seemed so distressed and hastened to assure her that it was ok. I thought it was very petty of Ted Wysocki, though.

In 2002, as an incumbent, I participated in a candidate forum held at one of our District elementary schools. Rules were announced at the onset of the forum. We were instructed to give a brief opening speech, stick to issues and not make personal attacks. I listened and complied with those rules. My speech was about what I had accomplished on the School Board and hoped to achieve if re-elected. Then came my opponent Jennifer Eitel’s turn to give her opening speech. Did she obey the forum rules, concentrate on issues, present facts? Heck no. She immediately launched into a vicious personal attack against me--even accusing me of harassing our church pastor to get dirt on her! Needless to say, Mrs. Eitel’s accusations were untrue. But that didn't stop her from including them in her campaign fliers and on a radio broadcast. Ironically, Mrs. Eitel and her running mates had earlier signed a pledge against making personal attacks.  My father-in-law had suffered a massive stroke at the beginning of the year, continued to deteriorate and died in April on election day. Dealing with my family’s grief at his suffering and loss was of far greater importance to me than Mrs. Eitel’s false allegations and shenanigans.

The next year, Jennifer Eitel was elected to the New Berlin School Board and became Board President. Not long afterward, she contended she wanted to “get politics out of our schools” and promoted a School Facilities Use policy change that prohibited political speech in school facilities and specifically banned candidate forums. The School Board (by majority vote) approved that atrocious policy change.  By the way, when Jean Crotty requested the use of the district cable channel to announce a voters forum she was having at City Hall, New Berlin Public Schools denied her request, citing the policy. The District’s lawyer maintained that the cable channel could be construed as a “facility”.    The School Board stubbornly clung to their awful policy which trampled on people’s Constitutional rights of free speech and assembly, despite a public outcry--- until the District/Board was ultimately sued. And guess what? When the School Board was legally required to respond to the lawsuit, it backed down and rescinded the policy.

So, Jennifer Eitel participated in voters forums in District school facilities when running for office. After election, she decried “politics in our schools” and took action to get political speech/candidate forums banned. Today, not only was Mrs. Eitel sitting in the audience at the candidate forum at New Berlin West Middle-High School, she actively participated by submitting a card with a question for the candidates.      Quite a flip-flop.

New Berlin politics continues to be hilarious - the community cartoons include the mentioned Dave Ament and his merry band of goof balls.  Like the New Berlin Citizens for Responsible Govt group who bravely announced this morning their endorsement of Ted Wysocki for mayor - ha!  This is a group of about 10 people who work hard to create an illusion of a unified voice of many citizens in New Berlin - such a joke.

The voters forum is another joke and was political posturing by Ament and company to take away from the citizens the ability to hear candidates speak for themselves.  It's harder now to get the truth out in front of people, which actually helps promote the wrong candidates.

Yup vote for Wysocki - taxes and lawsuits were rampant during his last term in office - keep the economy going .. bring back Wysocki.  Let's recycle bad decisions once again.  Great idea!  NOT!

New Berlin needs to move on like the United States federal government is moving on. It is so refreshing to have people like Obama leading our country. To have a federal government moving in the direction of being more open, honest and geared to the  average person once again is such a nice feeling. The sneaky, underhanded, information stifling activities of the Bush days is being put behind us at the federal level and now we really need to do it here in New Berlin. Citizens for Responsible Government and people like Eitel and Wysocki  really have no place here in New Berlin if we want to move forward and keep up with the rest of the world. Conservatives like one thing............keeping things the way they were "in the old days". It doesn't work well living in the past even though it can put a smile on your face remembering old times. Time moves forward and we need to be moving forward in New Berlin. Moving backwards and bringing back Wysocki for another rerun along with all the chronyism  and baggage that comes with people affiliated with that Citizens for Responsible Government group  is not a good idea.

Perceptive

I could care less about pandering political ideologies aty this point.  What I really would like to know is where you can view (if you can) the candidate forum online.

Unfortunately for the New Berlin voter, there is very little variety between the candidates.  While the local political junkie may see drastic differences based on obsurd political vendettas, most of the people in the real world see a just a bunch of people dishing out what we want to hear.

What are the backgrounds of the candidates, strengths? weaknesses? pertinent information, not just who their friends are...

The candidate forum was held during the weekend. The forum is not online per the City or NB School District websites---at least not yet.

Perhaps we'll get some information regarding it on Monday.

Not since involuntarily retired former State Senator Tom Reynolds left is there a more entertaining political  circus than New Berlin. BRAVO LINDA RICHTER!!!! Is it something in the water that makes this community so wacky? I don't even live in New Berlin but I need to tune in to the BLOGS everyday to review Senator Lazich's latest non-constructiive, melodramatic, "sky-is-falling"  prose, NBCRG wing-nut's and Linda's more than clever and sane rebuttals to their attempts at neanderthal political  hegemony in New Berlin.

Keep up the good work!!!!!

I went to City Hall this morning and inquired if last Saturday's Voters Forum would be accessible for viewing for those unable to attend the forum.  I was informed that the Rotary Club that hosted the forum had dropped off a tape of it at City Hall and people could come in to view the tape in the Council Chambers ( provided the Council Chambers isn't in use).

Audrey Juds, a member of the Rotary, assisted with the forum. Her NOW blog Then Again provides additional information about the forum--- and about viewing a tape of the forum at City Hall, where to view the forum online, etc.

Oh, and by the way, the "former school board member" Ms. Juds refers to in her blog, who twisted her arm to carry on Jean Crotty's tradition of holding a voters forum, was not me.

has additional information on where and how to view the forum.

Thanks to all who got this forum up on the web for viewing.

It does appear we have at least 3 candidates who are as unrealistic as all the other hard core right board members who have served and are serving with the belief system that you can have a quality school system without paying for it.

It appears candidate Manley thinks we can have technology teaching our kids rather than regular teachers. How will a computer reprimand a student in a classroom when the student is being disruptive. She is so unrealistic in her approaches to education and it's costs. She has been on the board before and is simply repeating things she said the last time. This is another rerun candidate.

Almost everyone is repeating all the old rhetoric. That rhetoric has brought us overstuffed class rooms, less variety in course offerings for the students and made our schools less competitive in general with surrounding districts. There isn't enough money to keep up with all the repairs so things are going to fall into disrepair again. These folks have been prioritizing for 9 years now. They have been combing through the budget for waste for 9 years too. If you haven't found the fat by now I don't think you're going to find it when you get your chance to be on the board. Please say something new !

The good news for those of you who don't mind seeing our district continue to decline is that the board will continue to be dominated by unrealistic people for years to come. Interestingly the Superintendent seems to realize how irrational these board members are and pretty much wraps them around his little finger and gets what he wants when he wants it regardless of what it costs. If he gets the things he wants from an educational standpoint we may still maintain a school district with some balance to it. Perhaps the Superintendent will neutralize our crazy school board members or better yet overcome them. Either that or he will move on in a couple of years to a district that values the balanced education he seems to desire.

Thanks Linda and anyone else responsible for showing this forum on the web. I just didn't realize all the candidates really are bringing nothing new to the table. That's rather disappointing.

Perhaps "Had To Comment" should consider running for a seat on the School Board.
