Vern Bentley’s published letter (Jan. 10, Waukesha Freeman) was a spurious attack on Alderman Bill Moore that distorted facts and Moore’s record.
Here’s my response, which was published Friday (Jan. 25, Waukesha Freeman)------
Alderman’s public service record set straight
Vern Bentley’s wacky and misleading statements regarding New Berlin Alderman Bill Moore compel a response.
Bentley’s recent letter stated, "Years ago, when Moore was on the school board, he supported a $57 million referendum for a new high school. He was not re-elected."
Actually, Moore won every time he ran for public office in New Berlin. He was elected to the New Berlin School Board in 1994 and re-elected in 1997. After serving those two consecutive three-year terms, he opted to retire rather than run for a third term. Moore ran for aldermanic office in 2005 and won by a landslide.
Moore served on the school board from April 1994 to 2000. He was not on the school board in December 2002 when it discussed and voted for a $57 million referendum for a new high school.

The New Berlin-Muskego NOW newspaper, Jan. 3 edition, had a wonderful article about our son Jason’s wedding. Within a week, my husband and I received a “SAW YOU IN THE NEWS!” card in the mail. A handwritten message from Rep. Mark Gundrum’s Office was inside, conveying congratulations to us and expressing best wishes to Jason and Christine. Also enclosed was a typed note, which referred to Rep. Gundrum’s deployment to Iraq and advised, “ Please feel free to contact us in his absence, and we will be happy to assist you in any way we can.”
Wasn’t that attentive of Rep. Gundrum’s staff?!!! It was a nice gesture that sends a positive message to constituents and community. That's an example of good public relations. Mark Gundrum should be proud of his staff members.
Contrast that with the negativity, name-calling, snide remarks, belittling, insults and other personal attacks heaped on the public from Sen. Mary Lazich’s staffer Kevin Fischer.
My Jan 5 blog asked, “Where is Sen. Lazich’s public rebuke of Fischer’s antics and her insistence he retract his words and apologize?”. I pointed out that in her Jan. 4 “Conservatively Speaking” blog entry, Sen. Lazich called Assembly Minority Leader James Kreuser’s words deplorable and said they should be retracted.
In the 18 days since I posted that blog, Sen. Lazich has posted 21 blog articles on assorted topics, such as touting her appearance on the Weather Channel. Were any of her blog topics on Fischer’s deplorable words? Nope.
Fischer's “This Just In” FranklinNOW blog states he is legislative aide to Sen. Lazich. This past weekend, Fischer arrogantly defied NOW’s rules by posting a bunch of comments to his blog that contained vulgar expressions, obscenities, jeers or other slimy personal attacks against FranklinNOW blogger Greg Kowalski (a 21 year old college student) and former BrookfieldNOW blogger Cindy Kilkenny. Those uncivil, repugnant attacks were made by Fischer and his pals Bryan Maersch, Fred Keller and Janet Evans.
Given that Sen. Lazich was quick to criticize an Assembly leader’s words, her failure to take a public stand on her own aide’s deplorable, malicious remarks is disappointing and troubling. It raises some questions.
Are we to conclude? ----
Sen. Lazich condones or has been willing to overlook her staff member’s habit of resorting to nasty name-calling, belittling, gibes, and other personal attacks against individuals, including her constituents?
Sen. Lazich has a double standard? Offensive words aren’t “deplorable” when publicly communicated by her “conservative” Republican associates in state government positions?
She considers a staffer, who often verbally abuses others publicly, an asset to her office?
She feels Wisconsin residents in her district and elsewhere, who have been viciously maligned by her legislative aide, aren’t important & don’t deserve an apology?

Our nation honors Martin Luther King, Jr., who was a remarkable activist, civil rights leader, and orator.
His words were inspiring and powerful.
Click on the BrainyQuote web site for numerous Martin Luther King, Jr. quotes. Here's a sampling:
- "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
- "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."
- "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
- "A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom."
- "A right delayed is a right denied. "
- "An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity."
- "He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it."
- "Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal."
- "Life's most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?"

To the disappointment of Green Bay Packers fans, the New York Giants beat the Packers in overtime at Sunday's NFC Championship Game.
So, it will be the Giants, not the Packers versus the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.
Despite the sub-zero temperatures at Lambeau Field, Giants quarterback Eli Manning played remarkably well. Although Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes missed 2 field goals during the game, he redeemed himself in the final minutes by kicking a 47- yard field goal that put the Giants on top 23-20.
The Packers had home-field advantage. The Packers did not play error-free: several penalties were called against Packer players. The Giants effectively shut down the Packers running game. Brett Favre had two touch downs, but also two interceptions. The last pass Favre threw was intercepted; shortly afterward, Tynes scored the game-winning field goal for the Giants.
The Packers missed several opportunities to win. It was a disappointing team performance and finish to an otherwise sensational Packers season.

Last Saturday’s Packers game in Green Bay was amazing.
The Packers trounced the Seattle Seahawks 42-20. That victory propelled the Packers to Sunday’s (Jan. 20) NFC Championship Game against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field.
It was all the more impressive because the Packers’ resounding win was achieved despite a bad start (they were down 14-0 after only the first four minutes of play) and poor weather conditions: snow, snow, and more snow.
The Packers will have to contend with a different weather hurdle for Sunday's Packers-Giants game: frigid temperatures (around zero degrees) are being forecast--and that's not including the wind chill factor. Brrrrrrr.
Packers fans throughout Wisconsin will be watching this game, rooting for their team-- hoping the Packers play well, triumph over the bitter cold, and defeat their opponent.
Having the Packers play in the next Super Bowl would be so AWESOME.
GO PACKERS!!!!!

A few months ago (at the September 24 New Berlin School Board Meeting), NBPS Administration presented a slew of facility projects, which it described as “dire” facility needs, “important” and “immediate” ---but which had not been budgeted for.
For example: Asphalt at Orchard Lane Elementary (drive, playground areas).
Bob Pulliam, Director of Buildings and Grounds argued that the asphalt was “shot” and described it as a “big problem”. According to Pulliam, the asphalt that was currently in use had never been sealed. Pulliam also said that better drainage was needed.
We are talking pavement upheavals, gigantic holes, loose stones, standing water problems. Obviously, not a good situation to have at an elementary school, especially one that has so many special needs students.
When Board President Keith Heun questioned why it was a safety issue, Joan Paque ( Director of Student Services & formerly Orchard Lane Principal), explained that some of the kids were in wheelchairs --and they’ve had some students catch and flip over because of the asphalt “conditions”!!!
She reported that at least one student had been injured because of the drop in pavement, and students were tripping and falling, especially when playing basketball!!!
And per Orchard Lane Principal Cory Whitsell: students exit through that zone and were “catching stones” on their shoes and tripping. He warned that stones on kid’s shoes were also being dragged into the school building, another identified safety hazard.
At the Oct. 8 Board Meeting, a few facility renovation projects were discussed. Orchard Lane asphalt replacement was again presented as an urgent safety matter--with Administration arguing that the project could be done before snowfall, possibly during teacher’s convention. Administration pointed out that there was no line item in the budget for asphalts and roofs and that the Board would have to decide how it would fund those projects.
New Berlin School Board Member Susan Manley accused the School Board of poor planning and not doing its job properly. That's a valid observation.
After all, the so-called “fiscally conservative” School Board/District had been primarily fixated on two “showy” facility projects and funneled mega-millions into them----
- the humongous new Reagan Elementary School, which boasts such “frills” as mosaic floor tile, wooden ceiling, and outside electric scrolling sign
- New Berlin West renovations that include an extravagant new Field House and cavernous auditorium
Meanwhile, a number of significant, important projects at District schools were neglected, overlooked, or put off, such as Orchard Lane asphalt replacement. Because the School Board/District had failed to allocate the necessary funds, Orchard Lane’s asphalt continued to deteriorate, endangering children. To Superintendent Paul Kreutzer’s credit, he has pushed the School Board to take care of these “dire” needs.
At the Oct. 8 Board Meeting, the motion “ To approve commencement of work on the asphalt project at Orchard Lane at the lowest possible bid, and (friendly amendment) to fund an amount not to exceed $270,000 to identify maintenance projects this year” passed on a 4-3 vote, with Manley, Matt Thomas, and John Kegel dissenting.

The NFL playoff game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks is today. Go Pack Go!!!
But isn’t it a shame that the NFL won’t let football fans watch the game on the big screen at theaters?
According to the Jan. 6 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the NFL confirmed it sent cease-and-desist letters to three businesses: Marcus Corp. ( Palladium at Majestic Theater in Brookfield), Rosebud Cinema Drafthouse in Wauwatosa, and Potawatomi Bingo and Casino. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy argued the businesses were violating copyright law and NFL policies that ban mass out-of-town viewing of NFL games. The news story’s last paragraph says, “McCarthy said theaters were showing games on ‘huge screens that can attract 50 to 500 people watching the games. Talk to your local TV affiliates, who will say those types of events take away from their ratings. That’s what this is about,’ he said.”
Oh. It’s about TV ratings?!!!
A Wauwatosa resident contends it’s about greed. In his letter to the editor “NFL shows it’s all about greed”, published in the Jan. 9 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jeff Kartz writes “…Now local theaters have been told to stop showing Green Bay Packers games for fear of being dragged to court by the NFL? It’s not good enough that taxpayers have to build their stadiums, pay good money for their tickets and are considered unpatriotic unless they subscribe to the NFL Network? Now we can’t watch a broadcast of the game at our local theater? Maybe if the NFL made people pay for the privilege or got a commission on popcorn, the league would go for it.”…
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (Jan. 11) reports that at least three theaters in the state (Rivoli in La Crosse, Majestic in Madison, and Fox Bay Cinema Grill in Whitefish Bay) plan to show Saturday’s playoff game on the big screen. Of course, those plans could change. In the news article, (NFL spokesman) Brian McCarthy claims that warning letters were sent to the owners of the theaters. And that “.. The league is arguing that showing the games on big screens violates copyright law. The league says businesses that offer such showings are creating a special event, which is unlawful. That makes it different from sports bars, according to McCarthy. The league makes exceptions for bars that show games on a daily basis.”
Huh? It makes exceptions for bars that show games daily?!!! It's OK for bars but not theaters to show NFL games? Occasional "special events" are no-no's but airing games daily is fine? That seems a bit screwy.
The NFL also considers it OK for bars but not churches to show games?
Greg Kowalski’s “Today’s Concerns” FranklinNOW blog post called “Goodbye to Packer games in theaters” informs us that the NFL refused to allow a church to air the Super Bowl game last year.

While Senator Mary Lazich’s Jan. 4 blog calls Assembly Minority Leader James Kreuser’s words deplorable and says they should be retracted, she’s turned a blind eye to the deplorable words of her own legislative aide Kevin Fischer. Where’s Sen. Lazich’s public rebuke of Fischer’s antics and her insistence he retract his words and apologize?
Kevin Fischer, Sen. Lazich, and Greg Kowalski are regular bloggers on FranklinNOW. Kowalski, a college student who just turned 21, is an appointed member of Franklin’s Environmental Commission. Kowalski’s blog is titled Today’s Concerns. Although Fischer has refused to let Kowalski post comments on Fischer’s blog, he floods Kowalski’s with numerous caustic comments, many of which are insults directed at Kowalski and his blog’s readers.
For example: Click on Kowalski’s Jan 3 blog entry titled Some commenting issues and you’ll find that Fischer posted comments on it 38 times, starting from 8:51 pm and ending at 1:12 am. THIRTY-EIGHT! Fischer’s 4- hour marathon of submitting mean-spirited, insolent remarks included calling Kowalski “Pillsbury Doughboy”, “Cheesecake Boy”, “cheesecake-breath”, “cry-baby”, and various other personal attacks. Far from being a wit, Fischer comes across as an immature, sarcastic bully picking on a college kid.
Fischer also taunted Kowalski with this gem: “You don’t pay Greg. You don’t even work full time. You have no clue what the real world is like. You are….what is the word….oh yes IRRELEVANT”
All of you high school & college students and other individuals not working full-time, should take note. Senator Lazich's legislative aide apparently considers you irrelevant!!!!
Fischer also snidely referred to some of Kowalski‘s blog readers as “numbskull”, “butt-kisser”, “naïve”, “idiot”, “mommy”, “wussy”, etc.
It’s disconcerting that someone employed as a state senator’s aide (funded by us taxpayers) resorts to such foul and unecessary name-calling.
I’m amazed at Sen. Lazich’s silence and inaction regarding Fischer’s deplorable remarks. The senator's legislative aide is mocking and insulting her constituents! Why does she tolerate it?

New Berlin School Board Member Susan Manley filed non-candidacy papers, signally her intent not to run for re-election. See news report.
It didn’t surprise me one bit.
When District Administration presented several projects at the September 24 School Board Meeting, that were described as “important”, “immediate”, & “dire" needs --but which had not been currently budgeted for, Mrs. Manley was quite dismayed.
She expressed “frustration” that “critical issues” at New Berlin West and Reagan School were on the list--grumbling that the School Board had spent a lot of money on those two schools. She conveyed “frustration” that some of those “critical needs” weren’t taken care of with the $33 million spent renovating West.
And then she voted against proceeding with the proposed roofing and air quality plans. However, the motion passed 4-2. (She and Matt Thomas were the dissenters)
When it met in October, the School Board discussed increasing the tax levy to address some of the more “pressing” needs identified in September by Administration, such as Eisenhower’s leaky roof, and huge holes in asphalt at Orchard Lane School. Mrs. Manley was again agitated and "frustrated". Referring to the "taxpayers", and fretful about how they'd react, Mrs. Manley complained that "we" (presumably she/the School Board) had not planned properly and hadn’t done its job right.
Mrs. Manley chose to vote against the motion/amendment “ to approve the commencement of work on the asphalt project at Orchard Lane at the lowest qualified bid-- and to fund an amount not to exceed $270,000 to identify maintenance projects this year”. The motion passed 4-3. (Mrs. Manley, Matt Thomas, John Kegel cast the no votes).
During Mrs. Manley’s tenure on the School Board, I emailed her a few times, but got no response--no email reply, no letter, no phone call, no attempt to speak with me at a School Board Meeting, and no answers from her to the questions I posed in my email messages. Nothing.
Hopefully, the Board Member who replaces Susan Manley in April will be more responsive to constituents, take greater initiative/action to be well- informed about District needs or problems, and will consider safety of students and staff a top priority.
