Silver Alert legislation to be introduced

Soon I will be introducing legislation modeled after Wisconsin’s Amber Alert Plan that would utilize the current Amber Alert system to inform the public about an elderly person wandering or becoming lost. Called the Silver Alert, the system would not increase costs because it uses a service already in operation.

The Silver Alert legislation has the support of the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Association, the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups Inc., and the Wisconsin Health Care Association.

I will appear on the Fox 6 Morning News Monday, January 12, 2008 at 8:50 a.m. to discuss Silver Alert. Here are recent media reports about the legislation:

Steve Bukosky

I am for and against this. Hey, if Kerry could vote for and against the war, I can do this too.

This has very good intentions.  However, call me callous if you wish, but I really don't care for the interruptions. Let me explain. I was enjoying a show on my cable TV one day when the buzzer goes off not just once, but probably several times over the next 15 minutes. It ruined my enjoyment of the show, which was not a repeat. Plus what was I to do? Grab a shotgun and run out into the front yard looking for the culprit? As it was, I figured that it was just another divorce child custody matter and later was proven correct. Now, If I'm driving around in my car and listening to some mind numbing head banger music where I actually have a slight chance of seeing the subject, fine. Go ahead and interrupt radio. When I'm at home, I'm in my castle. My sanctuary. My recluse from the problems of the world, unless I choose to participate!

The best idea I've heard is the option of joining in on receiving text messages or cell phone notification. Whatever. Just leave me alone when I'm in my house watching TV unless it's a tornado that's about to blow me down.

This is all about good intentions. Isn't that a little Democrat of you?
